BATTERIES / STAMPERS / CRUSHERS / ENGINES

For ease of understanding, the name "Battery" can refer also to Stamper or Crusher. Engine can have two meanings it may refer to a Battery or to any machinery operated under steam ie., mechanised whims, winches etc.,

The first company committed to quartz crushing on the Tambaroora Gold Field was the Royal Quartz Crushing Co. in 1853 at Dirt Holes Creek, the type of machinery used has not yet been identified.

The second was the Colonial Gold Co. machine in 1855 located to the north west of Dirt Holes Creek in the area later known as the Roasting Pits.

This was followed in 1860 by the mining community subscribed Victoria Quartz Crushing Co. instigated by Assistant Gold Commissioner Cox and supported by the community.

The Excelsior Battery owned by Mrs. Harriet Beard followed in 1863 at the junction of Newmans Gully and Tambaroora Creek.
