CARROLL and BEARD GMC

Information to be added when found, it is not my intention to write a comprehensive story on the Companies/Batteries etc., other than to provide data I believe to be factual, there are so many snippets of information available about the performances of the various Companies/Batteries over their lifetime. Sometimes errors have been made when reporting on the Companies which can be directly attributed to either correspondents or reporters being given misinformation or just not listening.

1873 - CARROLL and BEARD GMC - This image shows the addition of a new shed, note behind the shed what appears to be a masonry wall, this could be the first of the much larger masonry structure. The company shaft was sunk within the bark building, the masonry structure which eventually formed the length /width of the Lease was still to be built behind the bark building. Image has been cropped from a28225332 (653) (see Masonry Wall below)

The Masonry Structure

The masonry wall first appears in the image above when work was commenced after the company was registered in mid 1872, as noted on page 50 of the Star of Peace GMC publication new structures and machinery were put in place shortly after the company was registered: "This company, however, sank a good main shaft to the depth of 500 feet perpendicular, and erected excellent surface works, including a 12-horse power engine and boiler, and winding-gear, capable of working to a depth of 1000 feet. This company's shaft was used for prospecting the ground to the east to a depth of 734 feet until 28 July, 1877, when that work was stopped near the eastern boundary." ((645) Pg.50)

Apon the amalgamation of the Star of Hope GMC, Krohmanns GMC and Carroll and Beards GMC to form the Krohmanns Amalgamated GMC in 1879 the group determined to continue operating from the Carroll and Beard shaft...the realization that the Carroll and Beard shaft was already down 500 feet and that the surface works and machinery were far superior than the two former companies minimised any large expenditures to get the new company operational.
