ALL THINGS CHINESE
THE CHINESE OCCUPATION OF TAMBAROURA
Exact locations and sources of some sites have been deliberately withheld to protect any area's of historical and archeological significance.
The 1922 Tambaroora and Hill End Map has been used to locate the known sites as it more accurately reflects the layout of the area, but the positions have deliberately been made approximate.

Notes: | |
Location: | 1922 Map (371) In and around Section 1 on the northern boundary of the town. Section One was first located on the east side of Mudgee Road as shown on the 1877 Map, some time after 1877 it was re-located to the west side of the road as seen on the 1892 Map. Section One in the 1892 map partially covers Chinatown. As can be seen in this Image a new DP was issued in 2006 which covered this Section, it changed Lot numbers and combined some of the Lots, Lot 1 became Lot 7022, Lot 2 did not change and was not included in the new DP, Lots 3 and 4 were combined to make Lot 7023 and the unnumbered Lots in the western portion of the Section were allocated Lot 7021. There was also a settlement 1.6kms due west of the township. (536) 1922 Map (371) |

Notes: | The Chinese were spread over the Turon River and Tambaroora Goldfield extensively, it is known that they occupied two main area's around Tambaroora, the largest was at the northern end of the town in and around where Section 1 is located on the 1892 Map, the spread of mainly bark huts extended north along Tambaroora Creek and Mudgee Road, they also spread along the base of Red Hill just to the north west, some of the buildings consisting of the Josh House, shops and bark huts which acted as their homes were situated along Mudgee Road, small fenced gardens occupied the remainder of the space. The other area occupied by the Chinese was approximately 1 mile (1.6 kms) west of the town, evidence was found many years ago relating to this occupation, very little is known of the area but it was documented in a Testimony by Mr. Walter Hamilton. |
